About us + Why we’re here

Owners Tom and Sarah having a quick coffee at the counter in their family friendly cafe, Sussex Mother.

Sussex Mother is an informal, family friendly cafe, shop and play area housed in two adjoining poly tunnels in Hassocks. Our family run business is about seasonal food, excellent coffee and homemade cakes. We sell handmade ceramics, jewellery & home wares from local makers and have a free soft play and reading area. We want your children to be engaged for (at least) as long as it takes you to enjoy a coffee and slice of cake.

This has been a dream of ours for years; we like cooking and we like feeding people. In our opinion some of the the finest produce in the UK comes from Sussex so we're committed to using local producers. We hope that at some point in the future we can grow some of the produce we use, right here in the tunnels. We don’t have a microwave, we make as much as possible from scratch and the only thing in our freezer is ice cream.

We hope reading this makes you want to visit, you are very welcome. You can read a bit more about our story here.

Children’s Soft Play

We serve great coffee and food with ample space to cater for everyone. We know what it's like to visit cafes and restaurants with children, hoping to have a little downtime but the end result being stressful and sometimes embarrassing when all your kids want to do is play. We’re lucky enough to have lots of space to provide a safe area to play in without them having to be separate from you and without feeling like they are disturbing other customers.

Retail Gift shop

Featuring Artists and Makers from Sussex

In our retail space we stock handmade, unique gifts and homewares. It includes furniture, ceramics, jewellery and textiles, made by people who care deeply about their craft and put real love into what they do. We started putting the retail space together with friends, friends of friends and people we'd found online that fit with our style. Once we'd opened we were amazed by the response from other local artists and makers wanting to be involved.

We want to do what we can to support local makers and give you the opportunity to support them as well by offering a variety of precious handmade goods. Our stock is always changing and rotating so stop in often to see what’s new.

Events and Workshops

The tunnels are a wonderful place. Our space is flooded with natural light and a relaxed, indoor/outdoor feel which lends itself really well to hosting a variety of events. In our first year we hosted a yoga and supper club that comprised an hour of yoga followed by a light meal. We also held a day long, beginners upholstery workshop which took participants through the process of making a footstool, from beginning to end and included snacks and lunch. Children’s parties and family focused events are something people have been asking a lot about and we plan to have more of those to offer in the future.

Some of the ideas we have in the works are evening events and supper clubs featuring a variety of chefs and cooks. We plan to increase the amount of kids activities on offer and at some point would like to join forces with the good folk of Garden Sage to set up a young gardeners club, focusing on growing and cooking fruit and veg in a farm to fork type of class. Check out our events calendar for upcoming activities and workshops.

If you have an event you’d like to host with us, contact us here. We’d love to hear about it.

We also love children’s parties. If you would like to host a children’s party or event in our space, please get in touch with us here.
